Basic Requirements for a J-1 Visa
Sponsorship
You must be accepted into a U.S. Department of State–designated Exchange Visitor Program.
The sponsoring organization provides a Form DS-2019 ("Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status").
Purpose of Stay
Your visit must fall under one of the official J-1 categories (student, research scholar, intern, teacher, physician, au pair, camp counselor, etc.).
The stay should be temporary and consistent with the cultural exchange purpose.
Funding & Financial Proof
You must show sufficient funds to cover living expenses during your program.
This can be from personal savings, family, the sponsor, or scholarships.
English Proficiency
You need to demonstrate adequate English skills to participate in the program and function in daily life (unless exempt for certain programs).
Home Country Residency Requirement
Some J-1 categories require you to return to your home country for at least 2 years after the program before applying for an H, L, or immigrant visa (unless a waiver is approved).
Ties to Home Country
You must prove you intend to return home after your program (strong ties such as family, property, employment, or future career plans).
